Below are, in my opinion, the pieces of information that you need to pursue/learn before purchasing stocks or mutual funds.  None of this is get rich quick or how-to-time-the-market stuff.

Investigate the following:

Any book by Peter Lynch.  He used to run Fidelity's Magellan Fund and beat the stock market every year from 1977 to 1990.  During his tenure, Magellan was up 2,700%.  This is some of the best quality information out there.  It's also a very easy read for most of the book.

His two book are:

Beating the Street

1) Beating the Street

One up on Wall Street: How to Use What You Already Know To Make Money in the Market, Miniature Edition

2) One Up on Wall Street: How To Use What You Already Know to Make Money in the Market

National Association of Investors Corporation

This is a non-profit organization which wants to educate people on how to buy stocks.  Be careful, there are several organizations with a similar name.  It's a great source of information.  They also have information on how to form an investment club, which can a be a lot of fun and very useful.
